Rational Reactor Design for Enhanced Efficiency - PhD position (European Industrial Doctorate) Company Profile   The Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen and LONZA AG (Visp) invite applications for a PhD position within the field of chemical engineering. The position is available for a three year period as soon as possible. Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is one of the largest universities in Germany. Its Institute of Chemical Reaction Engineering provides a cutting edge research en-vironment at the interface of chemical engineering, material science and process development. The industrial partner of the doctorate - LONZA, located in Switzerland - is one of the world's leading suppliers to the pharmaceutical, healthcare and life science industries. Aim of the doctoral thesis is a significant increase in the ecological and economic efficiency of today’s chemical processes by means of rational reactor design. Description:   Contrary to bulk chemicals, industrial production processes for specialty chemicals are often not fully explored with regard to rational process optimization. The Marie Curie Initial Training Network "Rational Reactor Design for Enhanced Efficiency" follows a more rational process design approach for selected industrial process examples. The fellow researcher will conduct the following workflow: Data mining of existing information regarding the targeted process Identification of missing information and experimental studies to provide this information, e.g. detailed kinetic and thermodynamic data Modeling of the reaction system and model-based identification of the optimal reaction conditions Reactor design and manufacturing of the identified reactor components (including innovative manufacturing techniques, such as additive manufacturing by Selective Electron Beam Melting processes) Post-treatment of manufactured reactors, e.g. surface modification for introducing catalytic properties into the reactor Evaluation of the optimized reactor design in continuous mini plants and validation of the optimization process As the scope of duties will cover the whole spectrum from modeling to experimental evaluation, the applicant should bring the ability to get acquainted quickly and thoroughly with new subject areas. Due to the highly interdisciplinary task, we expect a highly motivated team player with good communication skills in English and if applicable in German. An excellent master degree or equivalent in Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry or comparable is recommended for application.
